Just like our food, body care has been quite an overwhelming subject to look into. It is simply astounding what is allowed in our cosmetics.

The skin is our largest organ and what we put on it will absorb into our bodies as if we ingested it. In many cases it enters the blood stream even faster actually because it doesn’t have to go through the digestive system. 

Some problematic ingredients in body care and cosmetics are:

• Parabens: cheap preservatives, can be toxic. Mimic estrogens: possibly cause breast cancer. 
     Are still considered ‘safe’!
• Phthalates: plasticisers: possible hormone disrupters, linked to diabetes, ADHD, infertility and cancer; danger to reproductive systems. Look out for DEP, DBP, DEHP, fragrance 
• Fragrances: perfumes: derived from petro/ coal based chemicals, to cover up unpleasant product smells & make them attractive. Possible irritants, may also contain solvents & usually alcohol 
• Alcohol: can be drying and damaging to skin: ethyl alcohol, SD alcohol, methanol, denatured alcohol, ethanol. Non drying, fatty alcohol is made from natural oils & fats: not damaging
• Aluminum and other heavy metals: in deodorants, Make-up products 
• Fillers, preservatives, gums, colors etc

The list of problematic ingredients got way too long!
